Nieves Josefa Garcia

It is with a broken heart that I announce the death of our families Matriarch and Rock, Nieves Josefa Garcia. Nieves was born on December 1, 1931, recently celebrating her 91st birthday. She was called home by God on December 22, 2022.

Nieves was a very loving, loyal, honest, and hard-working woman. She was born in Cuba, although her mother was a descendant of Jamaica and her father from Spain. Growing up in Cuba came with many obstacles for her; however, she always chose to face each obstacle head on. Her spiritual connection and faith in God is what she always said gave her strength in every aspect of her life. 

Despite her harsh upbringing, she sacrificed greatly to attend a reputable beauty school in Havana, Cuba. At that time, this was a school she could not afford. However, she made it happen. She could not afford the supplies needed to attend the school; So she decided to make them. Nothing stopped her from pursuing a better life for her and her children. Nieves became one of the most talented and known hairdressers from her hometown in Cuba.

Nieves arrived in the United States in 1979, at the age of 47. During an impactful period of Cuban history. Yet throughout her transition into a new country, she chose to continue her career and passion of being a hairdresser. Shortly after opening her own salon, El Arte Unisex on Grand Avenue. 

Besides family, this is how most people knew Nieves, as a Beautician. If you were a customer of hers, she treated you like family. Anyone who had the privilege of knowing her was impacted by her wisdom and presence in one way or another.

Nieves has joined her youngest child and only daughter, Ruth Rodriguez, in heaven. She is survived by her two sons, Winston McKoy and Ricardo Garcia. Her grandchildren - Ruth’s children: Rebecca Rodriguez, Jacqueline Baez, Joshua Rodriguez, and Maegan Rodriguez. Winston’s children: Geordani McKoy, and Hatuey McKoy. Ricardo’s children: Ricardo Garcia Jr., Rocio Garcia, and Roberto Garcia. As well as six great grandchildren, and numerous extended family members. 

May Nieves Rest in Peace knowing that her life has impacted so many and is celebrated by all who loved her.
